International Day of the World’s Indigenous People

The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is celebrated to commemorate the first International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People (1995-2004) which aimed to strengthen international cooperation for solving problems faced by indigenous peoples in areas such as human rights, the environment, development, health and education. The date marks the day of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations held in Geneva in 1982.
