From the Heart Renews Call for Submissions to Government’s Co-Design Process

The From the Heart campaign is renewing the call for all Australians to make a submission to the Federal Government’s Co-Design Process for a Voice to Parliament.

With only one week remaining for submissions to be made, From the Heart encourages all Australians to make a submission to reflect the strength of support for meaningful constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

From the Heart has made a submission to the Co-Design Process that reinforces the need for a Voice to be enshrined in the Constitution. Initial examinations of the existing submissions shows that around 80 percent of submissions include a call for a Voice to Parliament enshrined in the Australian Constitution.

At the National Museum of Australia last week, Noel Pearson of the Cape York Institute delivered a landmark speech outlining the need for a referendum on recognition, a core part of the 2017 Uluru Statement from the Heart. A Voice offers a practical route to solving the complex policy challenges for Australia’s First Nations people.

From the Heart Director Dean Parkin said, “We are encouraged by the many Australians making submissions to the Co-Design Process calling for real and practical change for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through a constitutionally-enshrined Voice to Parliament”.

“By making a submission, Australians are showing the Federal Government that there is a real consensus for change from both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the rest of the nation. Together, we can deliver a constitutionally-enshrined Voice to Parliament”.

“With nearly 80 percent of submissions supporting a constitutionally-enshrined Voice, Australians are showing it is time for a fair-go for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people”.

Mr Parkin said, “From the Heart reiterates our call for the Federal Government to stick to their commitment to a subsequent process to consider the constitutional and legislative options to enact a Voice once the Co-Design process has ended.

“With such high levels of support for a Voice in the Australian Constitution, the myth that there is no consensus amongst Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians has been dispelled yet again”.
