Introduction of the From the Heart Project

CAIRNS, 26 May 2020: The “From the Heart” Project commenced today, with the goal of sharing with Australians why an Indigenous Voice to Parliament enshrined in the constitution is fair and practical, and how it will unify our nation.

The commencement of the Project coincides with the three-year anniversary of the Uluru Statement from the Heart, which was delivered by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from all over the country and from all walks of life.

Dean Parkin, Director of From the Heart, said: “The Uluru Statement from the Heart is a rallying call for everyone to work together to get real, lasting and practical change to address the challenges faced by First Australians.

“Our country wants Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to get the same ‘fair go’ as everyone else and they see that giving us a say over what directly affects us is a practical solution that can deliver the lasting change we need.”

Research commissioned by From the Heart from the C|T Group shows half of Australians (49%) are aware of the Voice, and those that are aware are more likely to support it. Nearly three- quarters (73%) agree that a Voice would achieve a level of fairness and equality in our society, while 71% agree that Indigenous Australians are best placed to decide of matters that affect them.

Parkin added: “The COVID-19 pandemic shows that Australia is at its best when we work together. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are some of our nation’s most vulnerable, and as Australia seeks to recover from this crisis, a constitutionally-enshrined Voice to Parliament should form part of the national effort to get us back on our feet.”

From the Heart is for all Australians. Through online channels, such as a website, Facebook and Instagram, it will build awareness of the Voice to Parliament. The Project will also provide toolkits and assistance for the social, community and corporate sector supporters to share with employees and members.
